A little information about Boy Scouts and our troop … Boy Scouts has evolved over the years and one of the newest parts of Boy Scouts is the name. We are no longer to be named Boy Scouts of America, but rather Scouting - BSA. This change is a result of opening traditional BSA programs to girls. There are certain restrictions on girls joining the scouting program at the age of a typical Boy Scout, so please contact the troop leadership for more information.
Over all, Scouting BSA is designed for boys and girls ages 11 - 17 years old. There are many aspects to the program including learning life skills like first aid, personal management, personal fitness, camping, fire building and many other different outdoor skills. The program works with a ranking / advancement system designed to develop over time, whether a scout joins at 11 years old, or even at 14 years old. An important aspect of the program is to teach leadership skills at all levels and ages, up to and including Eagle Scouts. We try to teach the kids basic to advanced leadership skills and help shape our future leaders of America. The adult leadership of any Scouting - BSA program generally has a variety of backgrounds and knowledge to share with the scouts. Most of the meetings are done during the school year each week, with a weekend camping trip once a month or so. The troop activities are planned by the scouts on a semi-annual basis and as we say, the troop is a Scout Led Troop, with adult guidance throughout the year. The troop also does many community service projects either through coordinated efforts by the scouts, or local organizations reaching out for assistance.
We attend summer camp for at least a week each year, and have some dedicated troop leaders attend the entire week with the scouts. We let the scouts choose which camping adventure they would like to do as well.
The troop is sponsored by Sts. Martha & Mary Parish in Lakeville at 354 Bedford Street, Lakeville, MA 02347.
